We have been learning and acting out the story of Chanukkah. We learnt how the Jews would hide in caves to study Torah in order that the Greeks would not find them. When they heard the Greeks approaching, they would hide their Torahs and play with Dreidels instead.

Chanukah is around the corner!
Today we began learning about the story of Chanukah. We spoke about how the Jews lived in the time of the Bais Hamikdash (the Temple). The children got to see a model of the Bais Hamikdash. We learnt about King Antiochus who tried to stop the Jews in Israel from learning Torah because he wanted them to behave just like him. We talked about the many things that make us special as Jews. We have Shabbos, the Torah, and Mitzvos. We illustrated a class book where every child drew a picture about something they are proud of being a Jew. There is still a lot more to the story which we will continue in the next few days.

Counting With Dominoes
Kindergarten is about to finish our counting/numbers unit (though will always be reviewing). The children reviewed their counting skill by taking dominoes, placing them together and counting the dots on them. They would then write the number they counted. Another center rolled dice and counted both dice and practice writing the number they counted as well. Morah worked with the children in their workbooks to assess their progress.
Our Favorite Part of the Book!
We have learned so much with regard to our reading skills. Kindergarten knows:
- A book has a front and back cover
- What a title is
- What the author does
- What an illustrator does
- Who a character is
- They can tell you the setting of a story
- What their favorite part of the story is
We recently learned a story has a beginning, middle and end. When you read to your children, ask them what happened at the beginning of the story, what came next and what happened at the end? It will be a great review for them.
Morah read a story and the children broke up into groups to discuss and illustrate the story. This also helped them work on team work and sharing space to come up with one idea.
Jewish Home
This past week we introduced the topic of the Jewish Home. The children went to visit the Shul to see the different Jewish Objects found in it. We then discussed how a Jewish Home is also suppose to have Jewish objects. We then pretended to move into our own new Jewish Home. Morah brought a big empty house and as we learn about the different objects that go inside, we will fill up the house.
Handwriting Continues!
Our Handwriting Without Tears program continues. We learned the letters U and V this week as well as reviewed the past ones. Once learning the proper formation, the children had the opportunity to have hands on centers with tracing the play-doh letters they create, practicing writing with slates, a magnetic board or chalk boards. There is also a worksheet center that they sit with Morah and do. Their handwriting is really coming along.
Using slates with solid double lines and a dotted line to practice
Using Play-doh to form and trace their letters
Worksheets to practice. Morah gives us a sticker for good work :)
